System Description

The combined METcell with METcell CrossFlow System provides the user with the flexibility to carry out either dead-end (with the included METcell) or cross-flow filtrations for their filtration tests. The ability to choose the type of filtration will enable the user to carry out more tests, on more solutions and membranes, in the most efficient way. The METcell is a stainless steel, high pressure stirred cell suitable for reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) separations using aqueous and non-aqueous solvents. The MET Gas Unit is supplied with the METcell to allow safe, simple connection to a gas cylinder to provide the filtration pressure. All components of the assembled system are pressure rated to 69 bar (1000 psig). The METcell CrossFlow System uses the core components of the METcell to convert the standard deadend filtration unit into a crossflow system. This system can be equipped with up to 6 crossflow cells in series with less than 1 bar pressure drop (1 cP solution viscosity).

Why Buy the METcell with METcell CrossFlow System?

  1. More choice - complementing the dead-end filtration capability provided by the METcell, the CrossFlow System lets you carry out, for example, crossflow filtrations for concentrating solutions up to 0.8 L or carrying out diafiltrations (adding fresh solvent with an HPLC pump).
  2. Greater flexibility – in crossflow operation, the membrane area can be easily increased or decreased as required for your tests by changing the number of crossflow filtration cells connected in series. For instance, six 4” crossflow cells (with total area 306 cm2) or six 2.5” crossflow cells (with total area 113 cm2) can be connected in series with a system pressure drop of < 1 bar (based on a solution of 1 cP viscosity).
  3. More options for experiments – the METcell in dead-end configuration is perfectly suited for carrying out screening experiments, where it’s easy-to-clean components and rapid membrane changeover allow experiments to be carried out on many different solutions in succession. Once you have a potential application, take advantage of having multiple crossflow cells available, so you can test either several discs of one membrane type, or several types of membrane simultaneously with the same solution in just one experiment.
  4. More scalable data – once you have a viable applications you can obtain results that provide a better prediction for scaling-up, particularly with concentrated or viscous solutions and solutions that generate significant concentration polarisation layers – results from crossflow filtration experiments will provide flux and rejection data more consistent with process-scale membrane elements.
  5. High degree of safety - both the METcell, and METcell CrossFlow System, are designed following EN13445 to fully comply with the requirements of the European Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC) – use of the crossflow kit will maintain the pressure rating and integrity of your METcell.
  6. Ease of use – both the METcell, and MET CrossFlow cells, provide safe and easy operation up to 69 bar with high pressure mechanical couplings (ASME BPE 1997 compliant) and seals, as well as the flexibility of using swage process connections throughout.
  7. Easy installation – MET will provide you with a complete set of hoses, fittings, clamps, etc. to get you up and running with the METcell with METcell CrossFlow System. No annoying delays whilst specifying and waiting for ancillary parts to be delivered – you can be working with the METcell system on the same day you receive our kit!

The METcell with METcell CrossFlow System is available with 2.5 inch and 4 inch CrossFlow cells, for technical details please click here.
